Today’s esthetic restorative dental materials are highly functional and closer to human enamel than ever before. CAD/CAM systems and materials make it possible to restore patients in a single visit with beautiful, durable, homogenous materials precisely and predictably. Teeth, muscles, joints and nerves are all designed with a natural “give” to environmental stressors. Modern dental treatments and materials do not have this capacity, they are rigid restorations (teeth and implants restored with CAD/CAM inlays, onlays, crowns; Zirconia based prosthesis) in the resilient stomatognathic system. This alters the natural biomechanics of the stomatognathic system. Understanding digital evidence based treatment planning and single visit treatment delivery for these restorative options is critical to the longevity of proposed treatment and the health and stability the stomatognathic system for both the patient and treating doctor. After all, we want that smile to last a lifetime.
